Cape Paterson Family

From beach skills in Cape Paterson to playgroups, swimming lessons and parenting support in nearby Wonthaggi, families can find practical ways to learn, connect and enjoy time together. Regional options also support young people as they work towards independent driving.

🌊 Beach and water activities

Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club – Nippers and Starfish Nippers

Local Nippers sessions help members aged 5–14 build surf awareness, surf skills, lifesaving knowledge and teamwork, with competition available as an optional extra. Starfish Nippers provides children with disability with one-to-one assistance from trained helpers. A swimming assessment takes place at the beginning of the program, and a parent or guardian must remain on the beach throughout each session.

Offshore Surf School

Families and organised groups can book supervised surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, bodyboarding and snorkelling programs for all ages. The operator holds permits to conduct activities along the coast between Cape Paterson and Wilsons Promontory, so confirm the meeting place, activity conditions and participant requirements when booking.

Bass Coast Aquatic and Leisure Centre – Learn to Swim

Nearby in Wonthaggi, the centre runs children’s learn-to-swim programs and has a toddler play pool. Children’s birthday parties are also listed among its current offerings. Check program availability, age or skill placement, costs and pool supervision rules before visiting.

🧸 Early years and parenting

Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre – Supported Playgroups

Term-time playgroups at Mitchell House welcome families with children from birth to five. The free Bayside Health Supported Playgroup meets on Monday and Friday mornings for families with a Health Care Card or equivalent. A Wednesday Koorie Playgroup serves Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and requires booking. Registration pathways differ, so use the contacts named on the official program page.

Bayside Health – Maternal & Child Health and Parenting Support

Across Bass Coast, Maternal & Child Health is available as an in-community service, while parenting support is listed at Wonthaggi Hospital. Families can seek practical assistance with feeding, sleeping and other challenges that may arise with a new baby. Contact the service to clarify the appropriate access pathway.

đźš— Support for young drivers

Bass Coast TAC L2P Program

This regional program supports Victorian learner drivers aged 16–23 who live in Bass Coast Shire, hold a current learner permit and cannot access a supervising driver or vehicle. Learners are matched with volunteer mentors and a practice vehicle, with up to seven free professional lessons available before mentoring. The learner or a parent or guardian completes the application; Melanie Mumford is the program coordinator.

📌 Before taking part

  • Confirm age, membership, residency, permit or concession-card eligibility.
  • Ask whether advance enrolment or a group booking is required.
  • Check current fees, session dates, meeting points and weather arrangements.
  • Discuss swimming ability, disability support and accessibility needs early.
  • Review adult supervision and equipment requirements for each activity.
